  Future Fracture Risk

01 of 01

What is this patient's risk of a future fracture?
The most significant risk factors for future fractures are a history of fragility fracture (low-trauma fracture) and low BMD. This patient has sustained 2 fragility fractures in the past 6 months. The patient's ankle fracture, 5 years ago, was traumatic and does not increase her risk of future fractures.

Clutter in the house is a risk factor for falls that could result in a fracture. Removing such obstacles should be part of preventive recommendations for patients with osteoporosis. Independent risk factors for hip fracture include history of a hip fracture in a first-degree relative (her aunt's fracture history is not contributory since she is not a first-degree relative), low body weight, smoking, and a prior fragility fracture. Prior fragility fracture is also a risk factor for fractures at sites other than the hip.
