Studies have shown significant variation in physician
knowledge of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis
with these agents, and many physicians do not consider
addressing the fracture risk as complication of
glucocorticoid-induced bone loss. In many patients,
bone loss can occur quickly with oral glucocorticoid
therapy; but even inhaled glucocorticoids, with
their lower systemic distribution, may cause loss
of bone mineral density. Topics
covered in this program
- The effects of glucocorticoids on
bone remodeling.
- Evaluation of patients at risk for
glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and secondary
osteoporosis.
- Management options to minimize bone
loss.
