Inhaled corticosteroids were designed to
reduce the systemic complications of oral therapy
in the treatment of inflammatory respiratory
disorders, such as asthma. However, even inhaled
corticosteroids may have systemic effects, as
evidenced by reports of growth retardation in
children, and the development of cataracts in
adults who use inhaled corticosteroids. The
effect of inhaled corticosteroids on bone mass
is still uncertain. In general, the lowest possible
doses of inhaled corticosteroids should be used.
