Bone Turnover Markers
The monitoring of serum or urinary markers of bone turnover, in conjunction with BMD measurement, is an evolving method of clinical assessment. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled-trials of antiresorptive treatments in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis demonstrated that large changes in biochemical markers of bone turnover (70% reduction in bone resorption markers and 50% reduction in bone formation markers) were associated with over 40% reduction in nonvertebral fractures.18 Bone turnover markers may help improve patient compliance with osteoporosis therapies and in assessing therapeutic response. However, their clinical role in the management of osteoporosis is not established.10
