Teriparatide (PTH 1-34)
Teriparatide or human recombinant parathyroid hormone
(PTH 1-34) has FDA-approved labeling for the treatment
of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are
at high risk for fracture. These include women with
either a history of osteoporotic fracture, have
multiple risk factors for fracture, or who have
failed or are intolerant to previous osteoporosis
therapy. Teriparatide also has FDA-labeling for
increasing bone mass in men with primary or hypogonadal
osteoporosis who are at high risk for fracture.
Unlike antiresorptive agents, teriparatide therapy
stimulates new bone formation.49 |
